"Talk Derby to me" Kentucky Derby Party!

Part Two Recipes and Games

The most important part of a party is food!! For our soiree I kept it simple and made chips and dip. For the first time ever I tried making fresh salsa and guacamole from scratch... and of course we had Valvetta/Rotel queso.

For the Salsa I used a recipe from the Pioneer Woman because I love her. It turned out great! I would highly suggest using a large mixing bowl and a blender with multiple rounds chopping to avoid a huge mess. Also make well ahead of time so it can cool in the fridge first. Click here for the recipe.

For the Guacamole I used a recipe by Ina Garden because, duh, I love her too. I chopped everything in the Cuisinart and mixed it all in a large mixing bowl and left it in the fridge until 30 minutes before everyone came over then I added the avocado and lemon juice to avoid any yucky browning. Click for the recipe here.

The most important item of food for a Derby party is Derby Pie!!

Here's the recipe I used:

Ingredients

deep pie crust
1 stick of margarine
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
1 oz bourbon
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 cup chopped pecans
6 oz chocolate chips

Directions

Blend sugar and margarine (just get your hands in there and smush).

Add eggs (if you used a mixer before make sure to blend this by hand).

Add cornstarch and bourbon.

Stir in chocolate chips and pecans.

Put in deep pie tin

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes (don't get distracted like me...actually take it out after 45 minutes)

And ENJOY!

We also played a preppy derby themed game of pin the bow tie on the man

It was very easy to play and to make.

I found an outlined picture of a button down shirt online and enlarged, printed it, and glued it to a poster board.

I then printed and cut out a bunch of bow ties on pastel paper.

To play:

Stand 5 feet away from the shirt, spin 5 times, close your eyes and walk forward, place the bow tie as close to the collar as you can.

Get all the players to sign their bow ties so you can pick a winner after each round.

It was hilarious and wobbly and got more entertaining as the day went on ;)

I'm so sad the party's over, but maybe we'll have another Derby themed party this summer!
